General Election

general election 2024

In recent boundary changes South Norfolk has been divided into 2 constituencies. See map below.

6 wards have been moved into a new constituency called Waveney Valley where we are delighted to have had Adrian Ramsay elected as an MP.

The other wards in South Norfolk are still in South Norfolk constituency and Wymondham is now included. In this constituenct the candidate was Catherine Rowett. Here, despite doing little campaigning as we were concentrating on our target wards, we doubled our vote from 4% to 8%.

Adrian1

Born and brought up in Norwich, Adrian went on to gain a First Class Degree in Politics and Sociology from the University of East Anglia in 2002, where he received an award for his Politics essays. He later gained a Masters’ Degree and has lectured in politics and economics.

Adrian joined the Green Party in 1998 at the age of 16 because he felt the other parties were overlooking environmental issues and were not tackling poverty and animal cruelty. He still feels strongly that the Green Party is the only party with strong and coherent policies on these issues.

As a leading Councillor in Norwich from 2003-2011, Adrian oversaw unprecedented success for the local party seeing it grow rapidly to become the largest Green councillor group in the country at the time.

Adrian was deputy leader of the party from 2008-2012 and played an integral role in the team that saw Caroline Lucas elected as the first Green MP in Brighton Pavilion in 2010.

Adrian has served as the CEO of two national environmental charities, including the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) and has worked as a senior lecturer in environmental politics and economics. He currently leads MCS Charitable Foundation which advocates for renewable energy and green homes.

In 2021, Adrian was elected as Co-Leader of the Green Party with Carla Denyer, who’s a city councillor in Bristol.

Catherine

Dr Catherine Rowett is no stranger to the ballot box: having been a Green MEP for the Eastern region (elected in 2019), she was elected onto Norfolk County Council in July 2023 for the West Depwade division. She has also stood as a Green Party General Election candidate for South Norfolk in two previous general elections, and won a substantial share of the vote on both occasions.

The South Norfolk Green Party are delighted to have a candidate with such a record of electoral success, and with her wealth of political experience in international, national and regional politics.

Catherine said:

“The people of this region elected me in 2019 to be their Green Party MEP in the European Parliament- and that led me to explore many issues relating to the needs of farming communities, fishing, shipping, small businesses and renewable energy across East Anglia. But I also care deeply about rural transport, the provision of local services like post offices, banks and GP surgeries, and the protection of green field sites from over-development for housing or infrastructure projects.

  • Norfolk County Councillor for West Depwade, elected 2023
  • Parliamentary Candidate for South Norfolk
  • Former MEP, 2019-2020
  • Green Party National Spokesperson on Work, Employment and Social Security
  • Deputy Coordinator, Eastern Region Green Party
  • Convener of the Green Party’s Europe Policy Working Group
